1500 Oil and Gas (O&G) platforms exist today and over 1000 of them produce electricity for their own consumption through on site diesel or gas engines.
The power consumption for drilling and extracting oil is immense and represents about 5% of the wellhead production, totalling 16 TWh per year of energy, the same as the yearly consumption of a country like Croatia.
Wave Energy is perfectly suited to power O&G platforms, replacing the expensive fuel required for the energy intensive operation. For the 500 O&G rigs that have a cable connection to shore, this could be used to export wave energy to land as well.
